You will be building a website this semester where you will create your own "Storybook" based on traditional stories. Each Storybook contains four stories which are your own creative retelling of those traditional stories. This week, you will be looking at Storybooks created by students in the past to get some ideas for what you might want to do with your project. To get an idea of how this assignment works, you might want to start by taking a look at this SAMPLE Storybook Favorites Assignment (the sample is for Indian Epics, but the format is identical for Myth-Folklore and World Lit).
PART ONE: Browse the Archive. Here are the Storybook Archives. You can choose to look at Storybooks from the class you are enrolled in, or you can look at Storybooks from the other classes. The topics vary from class to class, but the basic idea for the assignment is the same. You need to pick at least THREE Storybooks that get your attention, either because you are interested in the content, or in the design of the Storybook, or both.
Note: Sometimes students decide to take down their Storybook at the end of the semester, so if a Storybook link is broken, just go on to the next one.
PART TWO: Write a blog post. After you have chosen your three favorite Storybooks, you will write a blog post, and give it the title: Week 1: Favorite Storybooks (class). You need to discuss at least THREE Storybooks, and provide a LINK to each Storybook. Your blog post should be a minimum of 300 words long. Here are some prompts that might help you as you are writing your comments about each of the Storybooks you have chosen:
- Topic: Is the topic something that is familiar to you already, or is it something entirely new? Does the topic fit into what you were expecting to learn about in this class?
- Introduction: Does the Introduction do a good job of explaining the topic and prompting you to want to read the stories?
- Design: What do you think of the physical layout of the pages, the use of images, the navigation?
Optional Image: If you want, you can include an image from one of the Storybooks in your post. Remember: if you do include an image, you also need to include Image Information, too!
