Firefox Web Browser - Word Count Plus Add-On
*** THIS PLUG-IN IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE CURRENT VERSION OF FIREFOX ***
I will update this page when there is a new version of the plug-in available.
For an alternative, try GoogleDocs or Spellcheck.net.
One of the many excellent add-ons for Firefox is called Word Count Plus. It allows you to click and highlight a portion of text on any webpage (including text you are typing in a form box), and get a quick word count.
In order to complete this assignment, you will need to be using the Firefox browser (you can get a Technology Tip credit for installing Firefox if you do not have it on your computer already).
STEP ONE: Install the WordCount Plus Add-On. To install the add-on, go to the Firefox WordCount Plus add-on webpage. You will need to restart Firefox after you install the add-on.
STEP TWO: Do a word count. Use WordCount Plus to count the number of words in this Aesop's fable: Town Mouse and Country Mouse. Just highlight the text of the story, right-mouse click, and then choose Count Words.

The results will show up in your status bar, next to the blue W icon.

STEP THREE: Email. When you have the word count, send the number of words in an email to the instructor. Make sure you use this subject line: TechTip Word Count.
When you have sent in the email, you can do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
