Technology Tips: Using Google Image Search

For this week's assignment, you will learn some ways to use Google Image Search. In particular, you will learn about the different between image files and webpage files, and how Google Image Search gives you that information. Sometimes you need a webpage address for an image, and sometimes you might need the actual image file address. In this Tech Tip, you will learn how to find both pieces of information.

STEP ONE: Go to Image Search. You can find a link to Google Image Search from the main Google.com Search page (just look in the upper left-hand corner), or you can go directly to Google Image Search at Images.Google.Com. To begin your search, you can type something in the search box, or you can use the Advanced Search options.

For this assignment, please find a good picture of the University of Oklahoma Sower.

STEP TWO: View results. When you first see the results, there are thumbnail images. Click on an image that grabs your attention.

STEP THREE: Get image and information. When you click on the thumbnail, you then get a view which gives you access to the image and information about it. You can use the "Website for this image" link to get the webpage address that is the source of the image, and you can use the "View original image" link to get actual image file address:

ADDRESS OF THE WEBPAGE on which the image is displayed. To get the webpage address, just right-mouse click on the Visit page, opening the page in a new tab, and that will take you to the webpage where the image is displayed. You can use this webpage address to create the Image Information link you need.

ADDRESS OF THE IMAGE FILE, separate from the webpage address. To get this information, right-mouse click on the link that says View original image, and open that link in a new tab. For example, here is a typical image address, ending in .jpg - image file addresses usually end in .gif, .jpg or .png, depending on the image file format. Note that this is NOT the address you use for the Image Information! Instead, it is the raw location of the image file, separate from the webpage, online. Click and you will see what I mean:

STEP FOUR: Post reply in Ning Tech Tip Discussion Board. There is a Ning discussion board where you can post Tech Tip items by "replying" to the discussion board: Tech Tips Discussion Board: Google Image Search. For this Tech Tip, you need to post a reply which contains the image you chose, the webpage address, and the image address. Please also include Image Information as usual! Then, after you are done, you might enjoy taking a look at the "Sower" images that people might have shared here, and you can make replies to their replies if you want of course.

When you are done, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:
