Ning: Ning Account Creation

We will be using a Ning site, OUMyth.ning.com, for blogging and also as a classroom space where everybody in the class can interact with each other. Perhaps you have already used a Ning community site before; there are thousands of Ning websites online. Some of those sites are public, while other Ning websites are private, like this one, where you need an invitation to join.

This assignment has three parts: creating your Ning account, adjusting your Settings (if necessary), and completing your MyPage profile.

PART ONE: Join the Ning. You should already have received an invitation to join the Ning. Here are instructions on how to use the information in that email to create your Ning account and to log on to the class Ning. If you cannot find your invitation email, contact me to request another invitation.

NOTE: Enrolled in multiple classes? If you are enrolled in multiple classes with me this semester, please make sure you read these notes about being enrolled in more than one class. You will use just one Ning account for both of the classes you are enrolled in with me this semester, and your assignments for both classes will go into the same blog.

PART TWO: Ning Settings. After you have entered the Ning, you can adjust your Settings. The link to your Settings is in the box with your name in the upper right-hand corner of the Ning. Click on Settings. Here are two Settings you should check:

  • You may want to adjust your EMAIL address. The email address listed here is the one you will use to log on to the Ning. It is also the address to which notifications will be sent. If you signed up for the Ning using your dotted name OU address, you can change the email address to your OU alias, or you can change it to a different email address entirely if you want.
  • Please check your NAME listing. Make sure you have BOTH your first name AND your last name listed - and for your first name, please use whatever name or nickname you go by (so if your name is "Robert" but you always go by "Bob," please list "Bob" here as your first name).

PART THREE: Create your MyPage profile. To get to your page, just click on the My Page tab on the Ning homepage, which is the part of the main navigation menu starting on the left hand side of the page. Make sure you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Photo. Upload either a photo or an image to use as your avatar. It's completely up to you if you want to use a personal photo as your avatar, or if you prefer to use some other image or picture. (I decided to use a cartoon for my profile photo this semester, for example.)
  • Profile Questions. If you did not do so already, make sure you answer the questions listed in the profile.

If you want to find some more ways to customize your page, you can find some Ning Profile Tips included in the Technology Tips for this class - so if you want to add a YouTube video to your profile page, for example, feel free to do that! :-)

DECLARATION: When you are done, make sure you complete the Gradebook Declaration.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have created a Ning account at the class Ning and logged on successfully.

I have answered the profile questions and uploaded a photo or other image to use as my avatar.
