Tech Tips: Browser Bookmarks

Because this is an online class where you will be doing lots of reading and research online at many different websites, you need to get into the habit of bookmarking webpages for this classOne great way to do that is to learn how to use the Bookmarks option in your browser. I use Chrome for my browser, so the information below is specifically about using Chrome. You can find equivalent features in Firefox and Safari. For this tip, you will explore the bookmarking options in the browser that you use.

Here are some tips that can help:

Saving Bookmarks. A web browser makes it easy to save bookmarks, and there are usually different options for how to save a bookmark. For example, there should be an easy keyboard shortcut for saving a webpage as a bookmark. In Google Chrome, you use Control-D to save a webpage as a bookmark. This pops open a dialogue box which allows you to change the name of the bookmark if you want, and it also prompts you to put the bookmark in a folder.

Bookmark Folders. As you accumulate bookmarks, you can organize them in folders. Your browser should allow you to put bookmarks inside existing folders or to create a new folder, and you should also be able to create folders within folders. For specific instructions on creating bookmark folders in your browser, check the browser Help section for the browser you use. For example, in Google Chrome, you can use the Bookmarks Manager to manage all your bookmarks, folders, and subfolders.

Bookmark Toolbar. It's very helpful to have a toolbar in your browser where you can drag-and-drop bookmarks and also display your bookmark folders. As you can see, I name my bookmark folders with just a single letter so I can squeeze more folders into my toolbar! When I click on the folder, it gives me instant access to all the bookmarks in that folder.

Synchronize Bookmarks. Your browser may also allow you to synchronize bookmarks across computers so that you can have access to your bookmarks on any browser. I know that is possible with both Chrome and Firefox; if it is not possible with the browser you use now, I can recommend both of those browsers as really good options that you might want to try! Especially if you use your browser on multiple devices (laptop, desktop, smartphone, etc.), having access to all your bookmarks all the time is incredibly useful.

Webpage Addresses. Before you save a bookmark, you need to make sure you are saving the right webpage. There are two special circumstances you need to watch out for:

Blogs and other dynamic websites. Some websites have content that changes all the time. If you bookmark the main page of a news site like CNN.com, that same content will not be on the front page forever, and the same is true of the homepage of a blog. You can see that on your own blog: as you add new posts, the contents of the homepage change. So, make sure you click on the specific blog post title to open the blog post as its own page to see the permanent web address of that specific post.

Search results. If you are looking at a webpage or image displayed in a list of search results (Google search, Google Image search, etc.), you need to click on the specific webpage or image to open it up on its own webpage, separate from the search results, so that you will be able to bookmark the permanent web address.

To finish up, write a blog post where you say something about your bookmarking strategies. Have you been using bookmarks in your browser? Do you already use browser bookmark folders? A bookmarks toolbar? Are you happy with your current bookmarking strategy? Do you have some other bookmarking strategies you would like to recommend? For the post title, use "Tech Tip: Browser Bookmarks" and use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post. After you've posted, you can do the Declaration!
