Tech Tip: Canvas Notifications

For this Tech Tip, you'll learn about Canvas notification options, and then you can log on to Canvas and configure your notification preferences. If you already configured your preferences, that's great; you can go ahead and write up the blog post based on what you've learned from that experience so far.

Here is how I am using Canvas for messages in this class (your instructors in other classes will be coming up with their own approaches):

  • Canvas notifications. I use Canvas to send out notifications that are related to a specific assignment. So, for example, if you miss the Monday Reading assignment, I'll use Canvas to send out a notification that you can still do the Tuesday Reading assignment. You can configure how you want to receive those Canvas messages (see below).
  • OU email. For messages that are not related to a specific assignment, it's easier for me to use regular OU email than it is to use the Canvas messaging system. It's important that you check your OU email, and you can have your OU email forwarded if that is more convenient for you.
  • Contacting me. When you need to contact me, I'd urge you to use the OU email system instead of Canvas. I will reply to any Canvas message you send, but you're likely to get a faster reply if you contact me by email instead. When I reply to a Canvas message you send me, I will do that using OU email.

You have a wide range of preferences when you configure your Canvas notifications: just go to Account in the left-hand system menu, and then selection Notifications. Most of those notification types are not relevant to this class since you do your own grading in this class, we don't use the discussion board, etc., but they might be relevant to your other classes that are using Canvas. You can learn more about Notifications from this Canvas video: Notification Preferences and there are some useful links here.

Finishing Up: If you have configured your Canvas notifications, you're good to go! Write up a blog post about the choices you made and what you think about the Canvas notification options in general.  Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Canvas Notifications" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration.
