Tech Tip: Canvas Profile and Display Name

For this tip, you'll configure your Canvas profile.  You have the same Canvas profile across all your classes in the Canvas system. Are you using the Canvas discussion board in another class? If so, that means it is a really good idea to set up your Canvas profile, which is why I am including the tip.

You can also choose to change your Canvas display name! That is a great feature Canvas offers that was not available in D2L. In any class there are usually about 10-20% of students who are using a nickname or some name other than their first name; if you are one of those people, you should definitely update Canvas to display the name you prefer. Plus... brand-new for Spring 2020 ... you can also designate pronouns.

You can see my profile here; I always use some kind of fox image as my avatar (because of the fox in Aesop's fables). I also included a very brief bio along with links to my websites. And I configured pronouns, which is a brand-new Canvas feature for Spring 2020.

I don't use a personal photo for the avatar because I want to make sure everybody knows it really is okay to use whatever kind of avatar you want: a personal photo is fine, but it's also fine to use some other way to represent yourself online. (If you want to see the "real" me, I've done some video interviews like here with Howard Rheingold, one of my online heroes.)

To configure your profile, just go to Account in the left-hand system menu, and then choose Profile, and then click Edit Profile on the right. This Canvas video explains the various options: Canvas Profile.

DISPLAY NAME. To configure your Display Name, go to Account, then choose Settings, then click Edit Settings to the right. I believe that students should be able to change the display name. If you run into any problems with that, let me know. (Our Canvas administrator just turned this feature on recently, and I am not able to test how that works for students.)

PRONOUNS. Again, go to Account, then choose Settings, then click Edit Settings to the right. One of the new options in the Settings is a pronoun option dropdown.

So, to complete this tip, configure your Profile, including some kind of avatar photo — that might be a personal photo, or a cartoon or abstract design, anything you want to use as your "image" in the Canvas system. You can also add a bio, add links, and change your display name if you want and also add pronouns.

BLOGGER PROFILE: There's also a Tech Tip about your Blogger Profile which you might want to complete at this time also.

Finishing Up: If you have configured your Canvas Profile, you're done! Write up a blog post about the choices you made: why you chose as your avatar image and why, what links (if any) you included, and why, etc.  Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Canvas Profile" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration.
