Technology Tips: Add a Widget to Your Blog

Blogger.com makes it easy to add a clock or calendar or some kind of just-for-fun widget to your blog sidebar. To complete this tip, you need to already have a Blogger.com blog.

STEP ONE: Access blog layout options. Go to Blogger.com, log in if needed, and click on the Layout link from your blog as listed in the Dashboard.

STEP TWO: Add a gadget. From the top of the right column, click on the link that says Add a Gadget.

STEP THREE: Browse/Search Gadgets. You can enter a search term in the search box to look for various kinds of gadgets (for example, Clock, Calendar, News, Tetris, etc.) or you can click on "Most Popular" in the left-hand column and see the most popular gadgets. When you find one you like, click on the blue plus sign to add it to your blog.

A new box will then pop up prompting you to give a label to the gadget box that will appear on your blog, possibly with other options you can set. When you are done, click SAVE to save the gadget to your blog layout.

STEP FOUR: Save. The new gadget by default will appear at the top of your right column. You can drag and drop the box to put it somewhere else in the column if you prefer. When you are done, click the orange Save button to save the changes you have made to your blog layout.

STEP FIVE: View blog. You can now view the results of your change to the layout. Just click on the View Blog link either in the yellow box at the top of the layout, or the View Blog link to the right of the main tabs.

You should now see the gadget displayed as part of your blog layout. If you don't like it and want to get rid of it, or if you just want to change some of the display options, you can click on the Tools icon in order to edit or remove the gadget:

When you have found and added a gadget that you like, send me a link to your blog via the email. Make sure you use this subject line for the email: TechTip Blogger Gadget.

When you have sent in the email, you can do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
