Technology Tips: Using Google Image Search

Make sure you do the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, before you do any other tips this semester.

For this week's assignment, you will learn some ways to use Google Image Search. In particular, you will learn about the different between image files and webpage files, and how Google Image Search gives you that information.

Step One: Go to Image Search. You can find a link to Google Image Search from the main Google.com Search page (just look in the upper left-hand corner), or you can go directly to Google Image Search at Images.Google.Com. To begin your search, you can type something in the search box, or you can use the Advanced Search options.

For this assignment, please find a good picture of the University of Oklahoma Sower.

Step Two: View results. When you first see the results, there are thumbnail images. Click on the thumbnail image to see detailed information about that image. (When you do this assignment, please choose a different image for your practice session with Google Images.)

Step Three: Get image and information. When you click on the thumbnail, you then get a view which gives you access to the image and information about it: you need BOTH the webpage address AND the image address. You should RIGHT-MOUSE click on each of those links to get what you need:

Address of the webpage on which the image is displayed. It is very important to get the address of the webpage on which the image is displayed so that you can link back to this page as your Image Information source if you are going to be using the image. To get the webpage address, just right-mouse click on the Website for This Image, opening it in a new tab, and that will take you to the webpage where the image is displayed - for example:

http://student-affairs.ouhsc.edu/prospective/HSCGeneralOverview.asp

Address of the image file itself. To get this information, right-mouse click on the link that says Full-Size Image, and open that link in a new tab. That will allow you to see the image, copy it to your computer if you want, and also to get the image address. For example, here is a typical image address, ending in .jpg - image file addresses usually end in .gif, .jpg or .png, depending on the image file format:

http://student-affairs.ouhsc.edu/prospective/images/NightSower.JPG

Step Three: Email. To complete this assignment, you need to send me an email with two pieces of information: the image file address of an OU Sower image, and the webpage address on which that image is displayed. Make sure you use this subject line for the email: TechTip Google Images.

When you have sent in the email, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
