Technology Tips: Google Site-Specific Search

Make sure you do the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, before you do any other tips this semester.

One of the most powerful things you can do with Google is to restrict your search to a specific website. For example, if I want to search the Sacred Texts Archive - http://www.sacred-texts.com - then all I have to do is add this to my Google search:

site:www.sacred-texts.com

So, for example, if I want to look for stories about camels at this website, here is my Google search:

The results will show the mentions of "camel" at the Sacred Texts website only. Depending on how the website is organized, you can even get more specific in your search, searching not just the entire website, but a specific subdirectory. To find the subdirectory of a website, just look for something that comes after the main website address and before the actual page name. For example, look at this address for the Asian materials at Sacred Texts:

www.sacred-texts.com/asia/index.htm

See how it says /asia/ as part of the address? That means that at the website, www.sacred-texts.com, there is a subdirectory called asia, and it has all their Asian materials in it. So, I can search just through the Asian materials by adding this to my search:

site:www.sacred-texts.com/asia

For example, here is a search of the Asian area of the Sacred Texts website for mentions of ghost:

Click here to see the the results of that search.

So, for your assignment, here is your task: figure out where the African materials are kept at the Sacred Texts website, and use that information to do a specific Google search for a story that mentions a TURTLE, and then send me an email with bibliography about the story (hints on finding the Bibliography information - and what a Bibliography entry contains).

Send me the bibliography item in an email. Make sure you use this subject line for the email: TechTip Google Search.

When you have sent in the email, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
