Technology Tips: Jing Screencapture

Jing is a free software application available for both Windows and Mac operating systems which allows you to do screen captures and save the image file to your computer. If you are having trouble with the built-in screencapture software on your computer, then you might enjoy trying Jing instead.

Here is how to get started using Jing:

STEP ONE: Download the free software (Windows or Mac) and follow the installation instructions.

STEP TWO: Start the software and register it, entering your name and email address when prompted.

STEP THREE: When Jing is running, you will see a faint yellow sun in the upper-right-hand corner of your screen. Here is how it looks on my Macintosh (the yellow sun is very faint; you won't see it unless you are looking for it):

STEP FOUR: To take a screenshot, click on the yellow sun. The sun will start to glow and get bigger. Click on the "plus sign" ray extending from the sun (the top of the three rays) which will capture your screen. You can zoom in to a specific area of the screen using the cross-hairs, or capture the whole screen. To capture the whole screen, just double-click in the crosshairs. You will then see a menu which allows you to SAVE the screencapture (far left option on the menu) or to CANCEL (far right option, marked by a little X).

STEP FIVE: In the editing screen, you can give your screenshot a name down in the lower left-hand corner; by default, the screenshot is named based on the current date/time. You can also use the editing window to add arrows or text to the screenshot along with other simple effects. To complete saving the image, click on SAVE in the menu of the editing screen; it is the second option from the left.

STEP SIX: Save the screenshot you have made to your desktop, and then send me an email with the screenshot image attached. Make sure you use this subject line: TechTip Jing.

When you have sent in the email, you can do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
