Ning: Including Images and/or Videos in Ning Posts

In the Ning editor, there is one button for adding an image and a different button for adding a video. Look just below the Post Title box and above the text box; to the right of the LINK link you will see Image icon, and then to the right of that you will see the Video icon.

ADDING AN IMAGE

  • Image on your computer. First, you need to have an image ready to go on your computer. If you are using an image from a webpage, right-mouse click on the image and save a copy of that image to your desktop, but keep the webpage open so that you can include the webpage address in the image information.
  • Insert image.  Position the cursor in the blog post where you want to insert an image and click on the Image icon. Use the Browse button to find the image file you have saved to your computer.
  • Position image. Images usually look best if they are centered!
  • Modify image width. If your image is 600 pixels or smaller, you don't need to modify the image. If your image is more than 600 pixels wide, you will probably need to make it smaller. Type in the number of pixels to adjust the width of the image.

Click OK when you are done, and the image should appear in your blog post. Remember to include image information, too! If this is an image you created, you just need to put a description (e.g. Grand Canyon, personal photo, 2008); if the image comes from a webpage, you need to link to that webpage. You can put this image information anywhere in the post. It does not have to be next to the image; you might find it easier to put the image information down at the very bottom of the post.

ADDING A VIDEO

  • First, you need to find an online video that gives you an "embed" code. If you are looking at YouTube, you will find the Embed Code button directly under the video; click on the Embed button and the code will be displayed in a text box where you can cut and paste it (here's a screenshot).
  • Now, go to your Ning post and position the cursor where you want to insert the video. Then, click on the Video icon.  A text box will pop up where you can paste the embed code. Click OK when you are done. Since embedded video is always linked back to its original source, you do not have to provide a link to the web source as you do with information about an image you have copied from the web.
  • TIP: If your video is not displaying correctly, try choosing the "old code" method of embedding, which you can access at YouTube in the options box - here's a screenshot of what that looks like. There are other options you can configure, too!
