Research First

Even if you are writing highly imaginative, creative stories, you can still do research to give your story additional shape and depth. So, for example, if you are writing a story that involves a sword fight, you can use Wikipedia and other online resources to do some research into swords and sword-fighting, and perhaps discover a few great details to use in your story. No matter what the subject of your story is, there is always some background reading and research you can do to broaden your knowledge of the subject matter before you begin writing.
