Technology Tips: Browser Screenshot

Make sure you do the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, before you do any other tips this semester.

In this assignment, you will learn how to take a screenshot. If you already have a preferred method for taking a screenshot of your computer, that is fine; you can use whatever method you prefer to do the screenshot, provided that the end result is a gif, jpeg or png image file. There are lots of software packages you can use to create screenshots. If you do not already know how to make a screenshot, you can use the instructions I have provided below.

STEP ONE: Take a screenshot that shows your computer desktop (sample). This should be an image file in a standard image file format (png or jpeg or gif). DO NOT SENT A BITMAP (BMP) IMAGE; bitmap images are too large for most email programs.

  • Are you using a Mac? To capture the entire screen, press Command-Shift-3 (or, if you prefer, you can use Command-Shift-4 to take a drag a box around a special region of the screen). The image file will be saved to your Desktop.
  • Are you using Windows Vista? Here are instructions for using the Vista Snipping Tool that can help you to take a screenshot. If you don't understand how to use the Snipping Tool or if it is not part of your edition of Vista, you can use Jing (free software) to take the screenshot.
  • Are you using an older version of Windows? The best bet is to use Jing (free software) to take the screenshot.

STEP TWO: Send me an email with the resulting image file attached to the email. DO NOT SEND A BMP (BITMAP) IMAGE. The image file you attach must be either a jpg, gif or png file. Also, DO NOT SEND A WORD DOCUMENT. You need to send an image file, not a Word document, in order to complete this assignment. Make sure you use this subject line: TechTip Screenshot.

When you have sent in the email, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
