Setting: Where and When

Every story takes place in some physical location and unfolds over a specific period of time. As the storyteller, you need to be very clear in your own mind about the setting of the story and the flow of time, imagining the time and place in great detail. Then, you need to carefully choose from all those details the specific information that is essential to your readers for understanding the plot and the characters of the story. They may need a lot of detail about the place and time, or very little. You need to think about that, and choose carefully. Remember: a few vivid details can often convey more about a story's setting than a long, rambling paragraph.
