Orientation Week: Course Materials and Technology

For this assignment, read through the information on this page carefully, and then follow the instructions for the Gradebook Declaration that you will find at the bottom of the page.

Online Course Materials

You will be using a lot of different online course materials for this class. In Myth-Folklore, ALL the course materials are online. In Indian Epics, there are four paperback books you need to get; all the other materials are online. Here is an overview of some of the places you will find the online course materials:

DESIRE2LEARN. You will find this course listed at Desire2Learn (learn.ou.edu) with your other courses. You will be using Desire2Learn to do all your Quizzes and Declarations for this class, and you can also check your current grade in the Desire2Learn Gradebook. You can also find links to the course website and other useful links in the Desire2Learn navigation bar.

ONLINE COURSE LADY. You are at the Online Course Lady wiki right now, and this is where I keep the support materials for my online courses, as well as at some related websites. If you can think of some information or instructions that I need to add to this wiki, please let me know.

COURSE WEBSITE. Each course has its own course website. For Myth-Folklore, you will find the reading and quiz materials at the course website; for Indian Epics, you will find reading guides and quiz materials at the course website:

NING. In addition to the course website, we will also be using a Ning website for blogging and class discussion. One of your first assignments this week is to set up your account at the Ning website. There is one Ning website for both courses that I teach - Myth-Folklore AND Indian Epics - so you will see people from your class there, along with students who are enrolled in the other class (later in the semester, you will have the chance to share your Storybook with students who are in the other class).

ESTORYBOOK CENTRAL. Another website with important materials for the course is EStorybook Central. That is where you can find examples of Storybook Projects people have done for these classes in the past and where you can find the online resources that will help you create your own Storybook project.

ONLINE COURSE LADY. There is also a blog you may find useful - Online Course Lady - where I keep writing tips and other reference materials you might find helpful for this class!

Technology Tools

One of my goals in this class is to introduce you to a variety of web-based technology tools - especially GoogleSites and GoogleDocs - that can help you manage your work online. One way that I do this is through Technology Tips which are assignments that you can complete for extra credit. During the semester, you can do up to 15 of these assignments for extra credit. None of these Technology Tips are required for the course, however - it's entirely up to you to decide which of the tips, if any, you want to complete. You'll learn more about that in your other assignments this week.

I hope that the information here has been helpful, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Meanwhile, here is the Gradebook Declaration to complete when you are done reading the information on this page:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have read the information about the course-related websites and the extra credit Technology Tip assignments.
