You will be doing a lot (A LOT) of writing for this class. You need to spellcheck your writing and you also need to be able to do a word count. In addition, your writing needs to use standard English grammar and punctuation, and you need to be able to proofread carefully. I've listed some tools and resources below that you might find helpful!
GoogleDocs is a free, web-based tool that you can use for writing and saving your documents. You can access your GoogleDocs from any computer, so if you are using multiple computers and/or working in computer labs or Internet cafes, this is a great option to choose. GoogleDocs has a spellcheck feature and a word count feature, plus a nifty built-in dictionary. If you are going to do any of the extra-credit Tech Tips this semester, please start by doing the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, since that is a good way for you to create a list you can use to keep track of the other Tech Tips you choose to complete.
Browser-Based Word Count. In addition to any word count options in your word processor, you can complete this Word Count Tech Tip to learn about some browser-based tools for doing a word count.
Browser-based Spellcheck. Depending on what browser you are using, you may be able to activate a spellcheck feature or use a spellcheck add-on to check your spelling as you type. If you are using Firefox, there is a Firefox Spellcheck Tech Tip that explains how to set up the spellcheck options in Firefox. Since Firefox is the only recommended cross-platform browser that is approved for use with Desire2Learn, the Tech Tip is for Firefox only, although you will probably be able to find a similar option in Chrome or Safari or whatever your browser of choice might be.
Proofread OUT LOUD. Especially when you are writing something for other students in the class to read, you need to take a few minutes to proofread your work and make sure it is ready for public consumption. For most people, the only way to proofread something accurately is to read it out loud. So, please, take a few minutes to proofread your written work by reading it out loud. You will be amazed at how many different kinds of mistakes you can find by reading out loud.
The Writing Center. The tutors at the OU Writing Center are ready to help you with any aspect of your writing. If you would like some extra help with punctuation or other aspects of formal written English, make an appointment at the Writing Center. They also provide online consultation. You can find out more about the Writing Center and its services at the Writing Center website.
I hope that the suggestions on this page will prove useful! If you have any questions now that I have not answered here, please let me know. When you are done reading the information on this page, here is the Gradebook Declaration you need to complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
I have read the information about the different recommended writing tools for class. I understand that when I complete a writing assignment, I need to be able to spellcheck my work and to do a word count if necessary. I will also proofread my writing by reading it out loud.
