Week 3 Internet Assignment: Building a Website

These instructions assume that you are using GoogleSites to create your practice website this week. If you want, you can use other software and your own webspace to build your practice website - no problem! Just contact me to let me know your plans, and make sure the website pages you create for your practice website meet the requirements for the pages listed below.

Returning Students: see note here.

Below you will find the instructions for creating a practice website using Google Sites. You will be creating a website with four pages, and it's really up to you what kind of website you want to create. Maybe you want to do a website about yourself (in which case you will have a homepage for the website, plus three pages that are about different aspects of your life), or maybe you want to do a website about your favorite author or actor or musician (in which case you will have a homepage for the website, plus three pages about that person's work), or maybe you want to do a website about your favorite sports team, or you can create a mini-cookbook, or you can publish a website of your poetry or other writing... it's your choice! As long as the practice website has a homepage and three additional pages that are related somehow to the homepage, that will be great!

STEP ONE: CREATE SITE AND HOMEPAGE: Follow these instructions to Create a New GoogleSite. The first page you will be prompted to edit will be the homepage for your site. Follow these instructions to Add Content to your homepage. You'll see that it is very easy to add content to the page! Make sure your homepage contains some text, at least one link and at least one image with image information. Make sure the link you create is a clickable link with real link text, not the raw http code (more information about that here).

STEP TWO: ADD AN ADDITIONAL PAGE: Follow these instructions to Create an Additional GoogleSite Page. In particular, notice the warning there about subpages: you do NOT want to make subpages; instead, create each new page at the "Top Level" of your website.  Make sure each new page contains some text, at least one link and at least one image with image information. (The GoogleSite Navigation Panel will automatically handle the linking of pages; if you are using other software to create your webpages, make sure your homepage links to your new webpage and vice versa.)

STEP THREE: CHECK NAVIGATION. Now check to make sure your Navigation Panel looks good: if you accidentally created your new page as a "subpage" of the main page, the navigation will not be lined up correctly. If the navigation is not lined up correctly, with both page titles listed flush against the margin, you will need to Adjust the Navigation Panel. If you had problems, be extra careful when you create new webpages. Do NOT make the page a subpage; instead, make sure each new page is a "top level" page.

STEP FOUR: CREATE TWO MORE NEW PAGES: Follow these instructions to Create an Additional GoogleSite Page, checking the navigation panel each time. Each new page must contain text, at least one link and at least one image with image information. By the time you are done, your website should have a homepage and three more pages, for a total of four pages.

When you are done, send the address of your website homepage to me in an email with the subject line: Week 3 Internet Website Address. Then, do the Gradebook Declaration. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have created a website with FOUR pages. Each page contains text, at least one link and at least one image, plus image information. I have sent the instructor an email containing the address of my website.
