Tech Tip: Canvas Gradebook

Starting in Spring 2019, OU has switched over to the new version of the Canvas Gradebook. Here's what you need to be aware of for this class: you can ignore the red "LATE" labels. Those labels might make sense for classes that use a traditional grading system, but they don't fit this class at all. I wish I could automatically remove them, but unfortunately that's not possible. It looks I will be able to remove them after each week is completed, though. So, if you see those labels appearing in the Gradebook, don't worry; they should disappear... eventually. For now, I will just thank you in advance for your patience with that.

Total Points. The way to keep track of your grade in this class is by looking at the total points in the upper right-hand corner, just like in the old Gradebook. You can use this chart to make sure you are headed for the grade you want: Progress Chart

Display Options. In the new Gradebook, you can display the grade listing by title, module, assignment, or due date. Here's what that would mean in this class:

  • Due Date: This shows the core assignments each week by due date.
  • Module: This is like the Due Date view but after each week is over, I move the old Module to the bottom, so the current Module is at the top.
  • Title: Because I use the week number in the title of each assignment, this option shows all the assignments, including extra credit, starting with Week 1.
  • Assignment Group: The assignments are grouped by week in this class, so this is the same as the Title view.

Of course, each instructor configures Canvas in their own way, so you'll want to explore those display options for each of your classes to see how you can get the most useful information.

Weekly Totals. If you scroll down to the very bottom, you can see your weekly totals. You always have "100%" in this class because you choose just how much work you do each week, and if you want to track your weekly progress, this will show you how many points you have completed each week.

Finishing Up: Explore the new Gradebook, and then write up a blog post with your thoughts about the new Gradebook. Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Canvas Gradebook" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration.
