Tech Tips: Sharing Your Photos at Flickr

When you are searching for images that you can freely use online, many of the images you will find are Creative-Commons-licensed images that people have uploaded to websites like Flickr.

For this tip, you will create a free Flickr account (if you don't have one already) and upload at least one image that you want people to feel free to reuse and share online. That might be a picture of a place that you have visited, or maybe a cute picture of your pet, or it could be a meme you have created. With a free account at Flickr, you can upload up to 1000 images to share with others. (You can uploaded unlimited images with a Pro account, which is what I have: My Flickr.)

STEP ONE: Create a Flickr account.

Go to Flickr.com and click on "Sign Up" in the right-hand corner, and then follow the instructions there.

STEP TWO: Upload an image.

To upload an image at Flickr, click on the arrow-cloud icon in the right-hand corner:

Then, drag-and-drop or select the file you want to upload. You can then edit the photo name and description, plus you can select the Creative Commons or other licensing you want to apply to the photo. Search engines can also read this information. You can find out more about the Creative Commons license options here, which explains how you can choose default settings for licenses so that you don't have to enter the license information every time.

When you are done, click Upload in the upper right hand corner. That image will then have its own page at Flickr! For example, I made this page for a picture of a sculpture I took in the Atlanta Airport: Madora (Flickr page).

STEP THREE: Write a blog post.

Write up a blog post with your image, along with image information, including a link to your Flickr page. Did you already have a Flickr account? Do you have more photos you think you might share at Flickr? If so, what kinds of photos do you think you will share? Have you used some photos from Flickr in your work for this class or in work for other classes?

Finishing Up: After you publish your blog post, you are good to go! Use the phrase "Tech Tip: Flickr" as your blog post title and "Tech Tip" as the label; then you can do the Declaration.
