Creating a New Website with Google Sites

For this Tech Tip, you can create a Google Site to use for your Storybook project. If you are doing a Portfolio project, you can use this tip to create any kind of website you want (for school, work, fun — whatever you want.

PART ONE: CREATE A SITE

Go to Google Sites; if you are prompted to log on, use your regular Google log on. Make a site by clicking on the Create New Site button.

Make sure you choose BLANK TEMPLATE as the option to start building your site. Since this is the default option, you don't have to do anything - just go with the default.

Name Your Site: You will need to give your site a name, which will be the TITLE of your website. Keep it short for now; you can always adjust the title later. GoogleSites will then automatically generate the web address for your site based on the title you have chosen (if you change the title later on, this web address will not change, so you don't need to worry about that).

Theme. You can change the template theme at any time, so don't worry too much about which template you choose now.

Options. The default options are all good; you do not need to make any changes here. (If you are concerned about privacy, you are not required to put your name anywhere on the site pages; that's up to you.)

Finished! When you are done, complete the captcha (to prove you are not a spambot), and then click the Create Site button at the bottom of the screen. You now have a website!

PART TWO: ADD CONTENT TO SITE HOMEPAGE

By default, Google Sites creates a homepage for your site; if this is a Storybook site, the homepage will be your coverpage. You should add the title of your project to this page, along with an image and image information. The HTML editor works pretty much as you would expect; you can find specific instructions for adding links and images here: Adding Content to a Google Sites Page.

At a minimum, make sure you add an image and image information to the site homepage.

PART THREE: CHOOSE HOMEPAGE PAGE TITLE

By default, the homepage title is HOME. You need to change that default to a homepage title of your own choice. Here is more information about how the titles work in Google Sites: Site Titles / Page Titles.

By the time you finish, you should have a nice Google site, ready for you to add new pages!

To finish up, publish a post where you announce your website, including a link to the site. Explain if this is for your Storybook, or if you are just doing a website for fun. Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Google Site Website" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration!
