Internet: Week 3 Website Checklist

For this week's assignment, you will be doing a "check-up" on the practice website that you built last week. This is the same kind of check-up you will need to do on your Storybook website later this semester. So, please PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION to these items - you will need to check on these same items when you start building your Storybook website in Week 4 and as you add pages to that site for the rest of the semester.

** If you did not try out some of the themes for your site, perhaps you will want to play with that this week. When you change the theme of your site, it does not change the content; it just changes the way that it looks. Here is information about changing your theme in GoogleSites.

NAVIGATION PANEL. If you are using the navigation panel option which automatically lists your website pages, you need to make sure of the following: ALL your pages are listed, the pages are in the RIGHT ORDER, the pages are all ON THE SAME LEVEL (i.e. you don't want to have to pop open submenus in order to view any of the pages; the page titles should all be flush against the margin). So, check to make sure your pages are all listed in the navigation panel, in the right order and on the same level. If you have any problems, use these instructions to Adjust the Navigation Panel. (If you have decided to use a manual navigation system that you maintain yourself, that is not a problem at all - just check to make sure all the internal links you have created are working correctly.)

LINKS AND LINK TEXT. When you create a link on a webpage, you should use good, clear link text - and not just the raw URL of the address. In other words, you should link to the University of Oklahoma website, not to http://www.ou.edu. If you are not clear about how to create a link with link text, please review these instructions for Adding Content to a GoogleSite Page. Please look at the links on your website pages and make sure you have good, clear LINK TEXT, without displaying the raw URL. Also, please CLICK ON EACH LINK and make sure it is working correctly!

IMAGES AND IMAGE INFORMATION. Remember, while you are required to have image information for each image you use on a page, the image information does not need to be next to the image; in fact, it will probably look better if you put the image information somewhere down at the bottom of the page, so that it does not distract from the image. So, please check each page. Do you have  INFORMATION for every image, and have you chosen a good LOCATION for that information?

IMAGE INFORMATION SOURCE LINK. There are two common mistakes people make in the image information source link: they link to an image file rather than a webpage (for example: this is a link to an image file), or they have link to Google Search results rather than a webpage (for example: this is a link to Google Search results). If you are having problems with linking to an actual webpage as opposed to an image file or search results, do the Google Image Search Tech Tip to learn more about image files and how to use Google search results. You need to check your webpages carefully to make sure that when you have copied an image from a webpage, you have linked to the WEBPAGE you used as your source for the image.

SPELLCHECK. GoogleSites does not have a spellcheck feature yet (I hope they will add one soon), but if you are using Firefox, for example, Firefox will do the spellchecking for you (information about Firefox Spellchecker); just open the GoogleSite page for editing, and Firefox will spellcheck the text you have typed in the box. If you see a red squiggly line, that is something you should check on - it may just be a new-fangled word not in the dictionary, or it might be a spelling error you need to fix. That is just one way to check the spelling; you can use whatever spellcheck tool you want to make sure you have spelled the text on each page correctly.

When you are done CHECKING EVERY PAGE carefully (be prepared to spend at least an hour doing this!), you are ready to complete the Gradebook Declaration. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have checked the Navigation Panel of my site. All page are listed correctly and in the correct order.
I have made sure to use good, clean link text for all my links to other webpages.

I have included image information for each image, and I have placed the image information in an appropriate place on the page.

In the image information, I have linked to each webpage which I used as the source for an image.

I have checked the spelling on every page.
