Technology Tips: Audio in a Ning Blog Post

Make sure you do the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, before you do any other tips this semester.

To complete this Tech Tip, you need to have recorded some audio in mp3 format. Please do not use copyright-protected mp3 audio. This needs to be audio you have recorded yourself (or something a friend has recorded - anything that is not limited by copyright restrictions). Any kind of recording software you want to use on your computer or on your phone  is fine - just make sure it saves the file in mp3 format.

This Tech Tip has two steps. First, you will need to upload your audio file to the hosting space provided by OU. Then, you will need to embed the audio in a webpage, such as in a blog post at the Ning.

Step One: Upload Audio File.
1. Log on. Log on at portfolio.ou.edu.
2. Upload. Using the Upload option (globe icon) in the right-hand part of the menu bar, browse for the mp3 file you want to upload, and then upload.
3. Make public. The file you uploaded is private. To share it online, you need to right-click on the file, then choose Manage, then choose Permissions. Click the Public check box and then click the VIEWER (READ-ONLY) radio button. Then click Apply, and confirm by clicking OK. To return to the main screen click on your 4x4 just above the main menu bar.
4. Get address. Now, right-mouse click on the file name again, and this time choose copy link location. This will either automatically copy it to your clipboard or it will display the link for you to see. The link will look something like this - with your 4x4 as the directory name, and then the name of the audio file you have uploaded.

Step Two: Embed File in Audio Player
1. Prepare audio player. An easy to use audio player is the free player at Flash-MP3-Player.net. Click on that link to configure your player.
2. Enter audio file address. In the form box that says mp3, paste in the address of your mp3 file that you copied in step one.
3. Copy HTML code. Now highlight and copy the HTML code that appears in the box below. It is a big chunk of stuff, so make sure you copy the whole thing.
4. Create Ning blog post. Now, go to the Ning, and create a new blog post. You need to click on the HTML EDITOR button to the far right at the top of the editing box. Then, paste in the HTML code. Click on Visual Mode to return to the normal editing screen. You can do other editing in the blog post there, adding a picture, text, whatever you want. Here is a sample blog post with audio hosted at OU!

When you have completed this tip, send me an email with a link to your blog post. Given the email this subject line: Tech Tip OU Audio

When you have sent in the email, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
