Technology Tips: Word Clouds

For this Tech Tip, you will create a word cloud. I used WordArt.com to make this word cloud of the different majors in the class for Spring 2020 for example. You can use word clouds both as a way to arrange and display a list of words in intriguing ways... OR you can use word clouds combined with word frequencies in a list to represent a set of words with more common words shown larger than the words which appear less frequently, like in the majors cloud. Either way, word clouds are a fun way to take text and turn it into a graphic! For this tip, you'll create a word cloud of your own, using WordArt.com or any other word cloud tool maker; you'll find lots of them: word cloud makers.

STEP ONE: Go to WordArt.com or whatever word maker you prefer and create your word cloud. The different tools have different interfaces. At WordArt, for example, at WordArt.com, you click Create, and then on the next screen you click on Import, which gives you a box where you can paste in your text. It analyzes the text for frequency, and then it shows you a spreadsheet which you can edit to make adjustments. You can then choose shape, fonts, layout, and style, and then click Visualize to see your cloud. When you are happy with the results (you can adjust settings and click Visualize as often as you want), use the Download link along the top to save your image to your computer.

STEP TWO: Share your Word Cloud. Tofinish up, publish a blog post with your image, along with the name of the word cloud maker that you used and the source of your words. Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Word Cloud" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration. Here's one I made when I wrote up this tip: Tech Tip: Word Cloud for Growth Mindset.
