Proofreading Practice

Returning students: Please read these notes about what to do for this assignment.

For this assignment, you will get a chance to practice your proofreading skills. From the list below, you need to choose two stories that interest you (I hope you will find ones that you like!), and then you will proofread the two stories very carefully, correcting any errors that you find. The stories contain MANY errors in spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Each of the stories is approximately 300 words long, so proofreading two stories should take you around thirty minutes or so, depending on how confident you are in your proofreading skills.

I strongly recommend that you read out loud while you proofread: reading out loud is the best way to make yourself slow down and really pay attention to what you are reading!

Here are the stories to choose from; please pick TWO STORIES based on whatever piques your interest:

When you are done proofreading and correcting your two stories, copy-and-paste the corrected stories into an email and send it to me - NO ATTACHMENTS PLEASE! You should not indicate your edits in any way; just send what you consider to be a correct version of the story back to me. For the subject line, use "Proofreading Practice." It would also be helpful if you let me know what you thought about this exercise — whether you found it hard or easy, how confident you are about proofreading, etc. I would also be curious to know why you picked the stories you did and what you thought of them.

As soon as you have sent me the email, you can then complete the Gradebook Declaration for this assignment - you don't have to wait on my comments back to you. Then, you can check to make sure I received your assignment by looking at the assignment stack, and in the class announcements you'll be able to see just how long it will take for me to get back to you. How quickly I get the comments back to you depends on how many items there are in the stack. (I'll be using this system of the stack and the announcements all semester so that you will always know whether or not I have received your assignment and also how long you might have to wait for comments.)

In the comments I send back, I'll identify any errors you did not catch, along with some help pages so that you can review any problems areas now at the beginning of the semester. Everyone usually has something or other that they need to review, and this way you'll know right from the start of the semester what item(s) you might need to work on.

Meanwhile, here is the Gradebook Declaration:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have made all the necessary corrections to TWO STORIES and sent the corrected versions of those two stories to the instructor in an email.
