Technology Tips: Animated GIF

For this assignment, you will create an animated gif. I've provided instructions below for using the free GIFPal.com service to create the image; if you have another way you want to create your animated gif using your own desktop software, that is fine, too! Here's an example I made with GIFPal using some of my Latin LOLCats. The specific cats are: Familias firmat pietas, Sapientia gubernator navis, Occasionem exspecta, Simile appetit simile, Sape et tace and Messe tenus propria viva.

STEP ONE: Get your images and put them somewhere convenient, like in a folder on your desktop. If these are images you have found online, make sure you also keep track of the image information (you might make a list of the images in a text file, along with the http address of the sources online). For the best effects, the images should be more or less the same size; you can resize them before you begin.

STEP TWO: Go to GIFPal.com and click Get Started Now - and then click Start Without Webcam.

STEP THREE: Now you need to upload your images. To upload, click Select Image, and then click Add Images. You can upload all the images you want to use from your computer at once.

STEP FOUR: Now you can take the images you uploaded and add them, one by one in order, to your animation. You should be looking at the window with your uploaded images (if not, click Select Image to open that window again). Then click on each image, one by one, to add it to your animation. As you select each image, it will appear in the right-hand window. Click the camera icon under the image to add it to the animation. Then click Select Image and repeat until you have added all the images.

STEP FIVE: You can change the delay between images in the left-hand side. You can also do that image by image in the separate frames below; click on the pencil icon for any frame you want to edit. When you are done, click Save GIF in the left-hand window. Then click Download GIF in the left-hand window to save your file.

Important Note: If you want to use an animated GIF in a webpage at a Google Site, you need to follow these instructions (Google Sites is strangely fussy about animated GIF images).

When you are done, post a reply in the Ning Tech Tip Discussion Board. There is a Ning discussion board where you can post Tech Tip items by "replying" to the discussion board: Tech Tips Discussion Board Forum. For this Tech Tip, you need to post your animated gif, with image information as usual. Then, after you are done, you might enjoy taking a look at the images that people might have shared there, and you can make replies to their replies if you want of course.

When you are done, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have completed the Technology Tip assignment following the instructions provided.
