Sneaky Verbs

LIE-LIE-LAY. These verbs are just evil. Here are some sample sentences to help you see how they work in the present tense and in the past:

LIE-LIED: to not tell the truth

Present: He never tells the truth! He LIES about everything.

Past: When I asked him where he had been, he LIED about it.

LIE-LAY: to be in a reclining position, stretched out

Present: In the afternoon, I like to LIE in my hammock and take a nap.

Past: After lunch yesterday, I LAY in the hammock and slept for an hour.

LAY-LAID: to put, place, set

Present: My chicken LAYS an egg every day - but not golden eggs, alas.

Past:  The gambled LAID his cards down on the table and laughed loudly.
