Make sure you do the GoogleDocs Tech Tip first, before you do any other tips this semester.
You may already be using a URL shortener, such as TinyURL (I use that one a lot myself), or Bit.ly (very useful for URLs that have a # in them, which TinyURL cannot handle)... and in this tip, I want to introduce you to Goo.gl, which is Google's URL shortener.
Why use a shortener? Sometimes it is nice to use a URL shortener just for aesthetic effect. Sometimes, though, it is essential: when you are pasting the URL into an email, for example, or into a confined space like a microblog or instant messaging service, the URL might break if you do not shorten it.
For this tip, you will take a long URL and shorten it using Goo.gl and then send the results to me in an email.
STEP ONE: FIND WEBPAGE. Find some webpage with a really long URL. For example, go to a Wikipedia article, and then click on one of the links in the "table of contents" - that will usually result in a long URL of some kind; for example, here is the Edgar Allan Poe article, linking directly to the landmarks and museums section. It's a useful link for that reason - but very ugly!

Of course, you can also shorten a URL that is already short - so don't worry about just how long the address is; any address will do.
STEP TWO: SHORTEN URL. Next, go to the Goo.gl webpage. In the space provided, copy-and-paste the URL of the webpage you found. Then, click the "shorten" button. The result is already highlighted, so you can just click "Control-C" to copy to your clipboard.

STEP THREE: SEND EMAIL. When you are done, paste the shortened Goo.gl URL into an email to me. Let me know if you already use a URL shortener (and, if so, which one), or if this is the first time you have used a shortener. Please use this subject line for the email: TechTip Googl URL.
When you have sent in the email, you can do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
I have completed the Technology Tip assignment and sent the instructor an email as required.
