Starting Assumptions

Each week, the first assignment you will do is a little blog post (just 150 words) in which you get ready for the new topic of the week, pondering what you know about the topic already. The idea is that if you have some ideas and questions in mind before you begin to do the reading, you will be able to focus in on what really interests you... and I hope that you will find plenty of interesting material in the reading every week!

You have a CHOICE of two topics each week, and you should make your choice before you do the Starting Assumptions blog post. There is a page which gives some basic information about your choices, along with a bit of reading as a sample. To see the weekly choices, go to the Myth-Folklore course website. You will see the links to each week there on the website's home page. There is also a link at the top of each weekly assignments list that goes to the page describing the choice for the week.

Starting questions: After you have made your choice, please write up a blog post where you explain your choice along with any reasons for your choice. If you are not sure what to write about, here are some questions to jiggle your brain: Was this an easy choice to make, or not? What were the factors that influenced your choice? What kind of background knowledge do you already have about the two topics for this week? Did you choose the topic in which you have more background knowledge or less? Do the topics for this week fit into what you expect for this course or are you surprised to find them here? What are the questions you have in mind as you begin your exploration of the topic you have chosen?

Please write your starting thoughts out in a blog post that is a minimum of 150 words in length. Make sure you do a spellcheck and a word count, and please proofread your post by reading it out loud. You need to include the words "Starting Assumptions for Week ___" in the title you give to the post ("Starting Assumptions for Week 2," etc.). You don't need to include an image but if you want to include an image, that's great! Since this is a short post, you don't need to include the usual proofreading checklist.

When you are done with this post, do the Starting Assumptions Gradebook Declaration... and then you can move on to the background reading!

NOTE: Based on your choice, you will then do the background reading and background quiz for that choice, and then you will do the reading and the reading quiz for that choice. DO NOT DO THE QUIZZES FOR THE OTHER CHOICE. You will do just the one background quiz and the one reading quiz each week based on the selection you have chosen. The other quizzes are NOT available for extra credit, but there are other extra credit assignments every week if you are looking for some extra credit points!

Here is the text of the Starting Assumptions Declaration:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

I have published a blog post with the words "Starting Assumptions for Week ___" in the title (fill in the correct week number).

My post is a MINIMUM of 150 WORDS LONG.

I have SPELLCHECKED and PROOFREAD the post.
