Jataka Tale: The Rabbit and the Coconut

For background about the Buddhist Jataka tale tradition and its origins in ancient India, see this page: Jataka Tale Resources. This story will probably remind you of the English folktale about "Henny-Penny" and how the sky is falling, but the Jataka version is thousands of years older! In the story below, there are many errors of spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. You need to correct all the errors that you can find and send the corrected version back to me, following the instructions for this assignment.

There was once a rabbit, who was sleeping underneath a coconut tree. All of a sudden, a coconut fell down and landed on the rabbits head. The rabbit woke up, and shouted, "The sky is falling. Its the end of the world!"

The rabbit then run off as fast as he could. Another rabbit saw him and asked, "What's wrong my friend?"

"It's the end of the world" the rabbit shouted. "The sky is falling!" The other rabbit raced after him, and soon hundred's of rabbits joined them, running headlong and shrieking about the end of the world.

A deer asked what is happening. "It's the end of the world," the rabbits shouted so the deer started running with the rabbits. After awhile, all the deer began running together with the rabbits.

The jackals joined in, so did the elephants. As they ran through the jungle, the animals all cried, "The sky is falling, it's the end of the world!"

Finally, they encounterred a lion. "What are you all shouting about?" the lion asked them

"The sky is falling! It's the end of the world!" they reply.

"Who told you that" asked the lion?

"The jackals told us" said the elephants.

The jackals then said, "the deer told us."

"The rabbits were the one's who told us," said the dee

The lion then turned to the rabbits, "And who told you?"

The first rabbit crept forward and said, "I did sir."

"Show me" ordered the lion!

The rabbit then lead the lion to the tree. The lion immediately noticed the coconut that was laying there. "Foolish rabbit, the sky is not falling," he said, "it was just a coconut that hit you on the head."

The lion and the rabbit then returned to the other animals, and announced the good news. "The sky is not falling," the rabbit shouted happily "and it's not the end of the world!"

In this way the lion saved the creature's of the jungle from their own foolish behavior.
