Technology Tips
: VideoNotes for Taking Notes with Video Timestamps

Videos can be a really important source of information, but taking notes for a video is more complicated than taking notes for a book. With a book, you can record page numbers and quickly go to whatever page you need. What about video? VideoNotes is an amazing tool that allows you to watch a video in the left-hand window while taking notes in the right-hand window, and the notes are automatically synched to the video timestamp so that you can click on the timestamp for any line of notes and it will immediately go to that moment in the video. I would give this application a VERY high "wow" factor! It is also fully integrated with GoogleDrive so that you can save your notes files automatically in your GoogleDrive documents.

Here's a screenshot of VideoNotes at work:

For this tip, you need to go to the VideoNotes site, connect to your GoogleDocs (GoogleDrive) account, find a video at YouTube, and try taking a few notes to see how it works. I think you will be impressed!

After you have taken some notes, if you look in your GoogleDrive, you will see a folder labeled VidoeNot.es which will contain the notes file you created so that it automatically links back to the VideoNotes site, with your video loaded. Since VideoNotes is integrated with GoogleDrive, it also offers the same kinds of sharing options as GoogleDocs does, so that you can share your notes with others (see the blue share button in the upper right-hand corner of the notes editing window).

To finish up, post a reply in the Ning Tech Tip Discussion Board. There is a Ning discussion board where you can post Tech Tip items by "replying" to the discussion board: Tech Tips Discussion Board: VideoNotes. For this Tech Tip, you need to post a reply which contains your comments about VideoNotes and notetaking in general: what do you think of this service? do you have a good system right now for taking notes while you watch videos? do you think VideoNotes is a service that might be useful to you? are there any notetaking tips that you would recommend, either for books or videos or other sources? Then, after you are done, you might enjoy taking a look at the comments and suggestions that people might have shared there, and you can make replies to their replies if you want of course.

When you are done, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
