Tech Tip: Blogger Design Templates

One of the best things about blogging software is that it allows you to experiment with the look-and-feel of your blog separately from the content. So, you can add content to a blog, while also having the freedom to experiment with the design at the same time. In Blogger, there are a variety of templates you can choose from and then customize by choosing the color scheme, background image, etc.

To access your blog controls, go to the Dashboard at Blogger.com and then click on Theme in the left-hand column. You will see different themes and color schemes to choose from if you scroll down in the right-hand part of the screen.

The Theme you have selected will appear at the top and you can click on the Customize button in order to change the background and choose different blog configurations. (Because I really like sidebars, I often use the Picture Window option, which makes it easy to have one or even two sidebars).

The first option to change is the background, and then you can choose other configuration panels in the left-hand menu below the background menu:

There are lots of background images to choose from, or you can upload an image (it needs to be a very large image to work as a background for a website).

You can play around with the different settings and configurations without any worries about your content: your posts are not affected by any of these layout decisions. The same content will appear in any blog layout you choose; it will just look different!

Blog post. To finish up this Tech Tip, experiment until you find a design you want to use for your blog. Then, write a blog post where you let your readers know that you have chosen a new design, and you can say a few words about how you came up with this design. That might encourage your readers to try redesigning their own blogs! Make sure to include the phrase "Tech Tip: Blogger Template" in your blog post title and also use "Tech Tip" as the label on the post; then you can do the Declaration.
