Technology Tips: Google Presence

For this Tech Tip, I'd like you to explore your online presence by Googling yourself to see what you find. As you might have guessed, I am the kind of person who advocates building a strong online presence, trying to be aware of online presence and managing that presence in a positive way. So, the first step in being aware and managing your presence is to see just what happens when people search for you!

Start by going to Google.com and type in your name to see if you come up on the search page. You can toggle back and forth between the "global" and "custom" search results to compare the difference. The person is the personalized search result; the globe icon gives you the generic search results, not personalized:

Then try adding more things to your name to see if that makes a difference — you can add Oklahoma, for example, or University of Oklahoma and see what happens.

Next, try a different search engine like Bing.com (or any other search engine that you know of and/or that you like to use).

To finish up, write up a post with the title Google Presence Tech Tip and include some comments about online presence. Have you Googled yourself before? Googled other people? Do you have a distinctive name that is easy to find, or do you share your name with many other people? Are you surprised by these results? Have you done anything to try to shape your online presence? Any thoughts or comments you want to share would be great; this is an important topic for people to be thinking about, especially if you will be looking for a job in the near future. Here's my sample blog post (just for fun I included an Amanda Palmer song video... you can write just a few sentences, though — I couldn't resist including that song and the lyrics). You might want to use the "Tech Tip" label so you can keep track of all your Tech Tip posts.

When you are done, you can enter this tip on your GoogleDocs Checklist and then do the Gradebook Declaration for Extra Credit. Here is the text of the Gradebook Declaration you will complete:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
