Creating an Account at Known
Known is a very new blogging platform with a lot of cool features that make it kind of like a blog and kind of like Twitter. If you want to experiment with that, I've set up a class Known blog — OnlineMythIndia Known — as a group blog, which means you can create an account at the site and add your own posts, images, bookmarks, etc. It's easy to create an account and get started! I've been using this space as a "curation space" where each week I collect and share some of my favorite web finds, and I will continue to do that. Maybe you will want to do something similar ("curation" is one of the Learning Challenges you can do for extra credit every week if you want).
STEP ONE: Create account. Go to the Log-In Page at the site (upper right-hand corner of main page), and then click register for a new account. It will ask you for a name, password, etc. It's fine with me if you want to use a pseudonym here; if you use a name that I will not recognize, send me a quick email to let me know the name you are using.
STEP TWO: Post! After your account is created (it should just take a few seconds), you'll see a message prompting you to post something, and below that you will see other posts at the site (since this is a group site, all our posts will be appearing together on the homepage stream).
Choose from one of the five icons what you want to post; I mostly use the blog post option, but you can choose from any of the five types shown there (detailed information about all options). From left to right, the options are:
- status update: type a short and simple text message (no formatting, no HTML), but you can include hashtags
- photo upload: upload an image, and then you can also add a title and caption
- blog post: create a blog post with text, images, embedded video — anything goes!
- audio post: upload an audiofile, and you can also include a description and hashtags
- bookmark: save a website address with a note, text note only, no images, but you can use hashtags here too!
Please INCLUDE THE HASHTAG for the class that you are in: #OU3043 for Myth-Folklore or #OU4993 for Indian Epics.
STEP THREE: View your post page. Every post at Known (status update, photo, blog post, etc.) has its own page. To get to the post page, just click on the time/date stamp that you will see at the BOTTOM of the post. For example, here's a blog post page that I reach by clicking on the time/date stamp ("about an hour ago") that you can see in this screenshot. (You might have noticed that this is an embedded Twitter tweet; one of the ways I'm using Known is to save Twitter tweets for future use, and embedding is a fast and easy way to do that.)
To finish up this tip, you'll need to be able to link to the post page that you created. Do you feel like creating some more posts? That would be great! Share anything that you think would be of interest to members of the class! That could be resources relating to the actual content of the class, and also resources having to do with writing, technology, the University of Oklahoma — whatever you would like to both keep for your own use and also share with your fellow classmates!
STEP FOUR: Blog in your own blog. Create a post in your own blog for class with a link to your Known post. I'm curious to learn what you think of Known so far. Have you heard of Known before?
