Formatting Your Posts in Blogger

I hope this list will help you with any questions you have about formatting your posts with Blogger. These same ideas also apply to any blog platform and to writing for the web in general:

  • LINKS. Make sure you use link text instead of pasting in the raw http address. Here's how to make the links in Blogger: Creating Links.
  • IMAGES. You need to upload the image instead of using remote linking or copying and pasting. You can find out more here: Uploading Images for a Post.
  • IMAGE INFORMATION. Each image should have image information, which means a descriptive caption and source information: Citing Image Information.
  • BIBLIOGRAPHY. For blog posts, the bibliography information you need is very simple. Don't use an automatic generator; just write the basic information yourself: Web Bibliography.

And here are some additional formatting tips:

  • Tx BUTTON. This is a really powerful button on the editing toolbar: it removes formatting, including invisible formatting you accidental import by copying-and-pasting. Just highlight some or all of the post, press Tx, and it will zero out the formatting and remove problems with font, color, etc. so that you can re-format the way you want.
  • PARAGRAPHS. Short, focused paragraphs are a big help to your readers, especially online. So, make sure you have a new paragraph for each main idea in an essay post and for each episode in a story post. You also need breaks whenever there is a change in speaker in a dialogue.
  • SPACING. As a general rule, you should double-space between paragraphs when writing for the web, and there is no need to indent paragraphs as you might for a printed paper; writing is easier to read online without the indent!
  • ALIGNMENT. As a general rule, you will want to center-align images, and you might also want to center-align titles and headers. For paragraphs of writing, though, don't use center alignment; use left-aligment for paragraphs to make the text easier to read.
