Week 2 Assignments

Congratulations on finishing the Orientation! Below you will find the list of assignments for Week 2. Each assignment has a due date, but I hope you will follow your own schedule, based on what really works for you. At the end of last week, you planned a schedule to try for this week, so try to follow YOUR due dates, not the Canvas deadlines below. You will need about 5 or 6 hours to complete all the assignments, and working ahead of the Canvas deadlines will make the class much less stressful and more enjoyable. You can experiment with the schedule until you find something that works well for you!

Also, this is the first week where EXTRA CREDIT is available, and you can take advantage of that any time. Maybe you can try getting into the habit of doing one or two extra credit assignments at the beginning of the week. You don't need to wait until the end of the week; you can do the extra credit at any time! And, if you take a look at the advice from last semester's students, doing extra credit is one of their top recommendations. You might take a look back at your "Assignments" blog post from Week 1 to see which extra credit options grabbed your attention. :-)

Reading - Storytelling - Project - Feedback - Comments - Extra Credit

READING

Tuesday due date: READING OVERVIEW

4 points  appx. 1 hour

You will start this week with an overview of all the reading options you will have this semester. Myth-Folklore and Indian Epics have the same assignments every week, except for the reading. Each week the reading assignments depend on which class you are in, so choose the link below for the class that you are enrolled in:

  • INDIAN EPICS Reading Overview: This assignment introduces you to the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the two epics you will be reading this semester.

Wednesday due date: READING ANTHOLOGY 4 points appx. 1 hour

Now you are ready to start reading stories! Then, for the assignment after this one, you will pick one of these stories to use as the inspiration for a story of your own. This will be true for all the reading you do in this class: the goal for the reading is not to take a test afterwards; instead, the goal is to find material you can use to tell your own stories.

  • MYTH-FOLKLORE Anthology. This is a collection of different types of stories from different cultural traditions, giving you a quick survey of the kinds of reading you will find in the UnTextbook.

  • INDIAN EPICS Anthology. This is a collection of short Buddhist jataka stories to start the semester! (These Buddhist stories date from approximately the same period as the Hindu epics that you will start reading in Week 2.)

STORYTELLING

Thursday due date: STORYTELLING

4 points  appx. 1 hour

Now you will retell one of the stories from the story anthology in your own words. This is just the first of many stories you will be writing this semester, and I hope you will have fun! Here's how it works: YOUR FIRST STORY. (Next week, you'll start reading each other's stories and commenting, and you'll get to see how everybody approaches the storytelling in their own individual way.)

PROJECT - FEEDBACK - COMMENTS

Friday/weekend: PROJECT

8 points  appx. 60-90 min.

To see how the projects work week by week for the whole semester, take a look at this Overview of the Semester ProjectThen, after you have looked at the Overview, you are ready for the actual brainstorming assignment that you need to turn in this week. Follow the instructions for the class you are in:

I will be sending you back comments about this assignment, and the sooner you can turn it in, the sooner you will get comments back from me.

Friday/weekend: PROJECT FEEDBACK 6 points 45 min. - 1 hour

Starting in Week 6, you'll be leaving detailed feedback for people on their projects. During Weeks 2-5, you'll be learning about feedback in general plus specific feedback strategies. For Week 2, the assignment is: Feedback Thoughts, with a focus is on how making mistakes and getting feedback is all part of the learning process.

Friday/weekend: BLOG COMMENTS (available on Tuesday) 4 points 30 min. - 45 min.

Each week you will be leaving comments on other people's blogs, and this week the focus is on the Introductions: for this assignment, you will be reading and commenting on the Introductions of four different people in your class. More information here: Week 2 Blog Comments.

EXTRA CREDIT

Especially now, at the beginning of the semester, it is really good to do extra credit! That way, when things get busier later in the semester, you will be able to skip some assignments in this class. So, build up those extra credit points now if you have some free time. You can do these assignments at any time during the week when you have some free time:

You can do these extra credit options any time during the week.

Extra Reading. I really hope you will consider doing extra reading each week so that you can use this class to learn more about specific topics that are of interest to you! Here is how the extra credit reading assignment works:

OR

Extra Commenting. Connect with new people and/or reconnect with people you have met already by doing extra comments.

4 points  45 min. - 1 hour

Extra Writing: Microfictions. This is an extra credit option focused on microfictions. Unlike the stories you are writing for class (300-1000 words for your blog posts; 500-1000 words for your class project), these microfictions are just 100 words long, or even shorter. You can use this extra credit option to learn more about microfictions and try writing some of your own. You can retell stories from the reading or write stories totally from your imagination, or you could try bio-fiction, writing some microfictions based on your own life story. Then, in future weeks, there is also a Microfiction Revision option if you want to polish your story!

4 points  30 min. - 45 min.
Check-in/Connection. This is a new extra credit option for Fall 2020. There's a quick anonymous survey to gauge the class mood (because, yes, this is going to be a very stressful semester), and also a Padlet where you can add some upbeat music or an inspiring graphic or whatever you think could help everybody in class to destress and cope with whatever the semester brings. 2 points   15 min. - 30 min.
Growth Mindset OR H.E.A.R.T. If you liked what you learned about Growth Mindset last week, you can use this option to learn more about that growth mindset OR you can work on HEARTHealth/Happiness, Empathy, Attention, Reading, or Time Management. There is lots of information to explore and ideas you can apply to your life as a student. 2 points   15 min. - 30 min.
Wikipedia Trails. You could use this assignment to follow up on a project topic, looking for useful background information. There is always lots you can learn from exploring Wikipedia!
2 points   15 min. - 30 min.
Tech Tips There are lots of Technology Tips to choose from. If you want to do lots of tips now at the start of the semester, you can do that too: start with Week 2, then Week 3, Week 4, and so on. All those Declarations are available in Canvas now. 2 points 15 min. - 30 min.
These additional extra credit options are for the end of the week OR you can use them at the START of the new week, looking back on the week you just finished:
Famous Last Words. This option is for looking back on the past week while also looking forward to next week. 2 points   15 min. - 30 min.
Back-up and Review. I highly recommend this extra credit option: it gives you a chance to look back over any daily announcements you might have missed, and also to check on your Declarations in Canvas. 2 points   15 min. - 30 min.
